I am a professional counselor with a Master of Arts in Counseling from St. Edwards University in Austin. In addition, I did extensive independent study around the body’s stress response and trauma processing with a local PhD who is a trauma expert and trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as a treatment approach.  During my internship, I worked with adolescents in various school settings and in private practice with adolescents, adults and families dealing with various life issues such as:  anxiety, depression, codependency, life transitions, marital and relationship conflict, addiction, serious mental illness, ADHD management, parenting concerns,  behavioral management and trauma recovery.   Prior to my training at St. Edwards, I worked as a social worker with children and adults in schools, foster care and homeless outreach.  Taking a break to start my own family, I came back to counseling when my children were school age.

My approach to counseling is person centered and eclectic.  I am always looking to the client to indicate what his/her/their needs are. To help me  to select interventions or techniques that will move them along their healing path.  I view my role as a facilitator in helping the client access their own natural healing process.   Using techniques ranging from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, to interpersonal interventions to EMDR depending on the clients level of readiness and awareness for the therapy process.  I particularly like EMDR because it truly does access the body’s natural healing process.  Simply by highlighting a difficult life experience and tapping into the individuals own neurobiological process for interpreting those events, the person can re-experience the event and understand it in a new, more positive way.  Along with the skills I have learned, I use my own intuition and life experiences to inform the therapy process and develop a therapeutic relationship with my clients.

EMDR : Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing was developed by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. in 1987 as a means of treating trauma victims.  EMDR is now the most researched treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and is endorsed by the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, and the Veterans Administration.
